Комедии Конгрива «Старый холостяк», «Двойная игра» и «Так поступают в свете» переводятся на русский язык впервые; комедия «Любовь за любовь» публиковалась ранее (М., «Искусство», 1965), для настоящего сборника она заново отредактирована.

У комедий Конгрива завидная театральная судьба: в течение более двух с половиной столетий они идут на сценах различных английских театров. Образы, созданные Конгривом, вошли в творческую биографию многих актеров и актрис разных эпох. Советскому зрителю известен спектакль Национального театра Англии «Любовь за любовь», поставленный режиссером Питером Вудом и показанный во время гастролей театра в Москве в 1965 г.
Русскому читателю имя Конгрива знакомо сравнительно мало. В конце XIX в. его работы упоминались в статьях обзорного характера, посвященных английскому театру и драматургии (см., например: А. А. Чебышев. Очерки из истории европейской драмы. Английская комедия конца XVII и половины XVIII вв. - «Журнал министерства народного просвещения», 1897, апрель и май, Э 310-311). В 1929 г. имя Конгрива упоминалось в книге А. С. Булгакова «Театр и театральная общественность Лондона эпохи расцвета торгового капитализма», изданной в Ленинграде. В 40-60-е годы
Конгриву посвящались страницы в учебниках и хрестоматиях по английской литературе, его творчество характеризовалось в работах и исследованиях А. А. Аникста, А. А. Елистратовой, Ю. И. Кагарлицкого, Е. Л. Ланна, В. Д. Рака.
